A new analysis by Suhrhoff et al. published in Nature examined water chemistry across the Mississippi River basin and found that agricultural liming, long classified by the IPCC as a greenhouse-gas source, has actually removed more CO2 from the atmosphere than it released. US farmers apply over 30 million tonnes of lime annually to manage soil pH, and the reaction was previously assumed to emit CO2 directly.
After the Trump administration cut funding for the US Global Change Research Program and pulled past climate reports offline, the American Geophysical Union and American Meteorological Society created a new system to preserve this research. Instead of one coordinated government report, teams of scientists will publish peer-reviewed papers in journals that feed into a shared 'US Climate Collection.' The first entry, authored by 149 researchers—many of whom had worked on the now-defunct federal assessment—was published simultaneously in two journals to set priorities for future submissions.
A group of researchers, including members of the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality convened by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, has proposed creating an International Panel on Inequality (IPI). The body would function like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, systematically reviewing evidence on the scale, causes and effects of inequality and assessing which policies actually reduce it. A founding committee has already begun developing the proposal after it was presented to G20 governments earlier this year.
