The creator of Jactl, an embeddable scripting language for Java, explains how it was built to avoid blocking event-loop threads even though it targeted Java 8 and 11, long before Virtual Threads and Project Loom existed. Jactl uses an internal async mechanism that suspends a script's execution during blocking operations like database calls, freeing the underlying thread, and later resumes the script once the result is ready.

Broadcom is rolling out an initiative called TrueSource under its Tanzu division to vet and secure open-source components used alongside its platform, covering Spring, RabbitMQ, and various Java, Python, and Node.js libraries. Tanzu VP Purnima Padmanabhan said the company builds and curates these artifacts itself, ensuring they meet a reference architecture and remain supportable, while a VMware spokesperson added that Broadcom will contribute fixes upstream and defer to community maintainers as the ultimate source of truth for projects it doesn't directly maintain.

When Krakatau erupted on August 27, 1883, obliterating most of three islands between Java and Sumatra, telegraph wires carried real-time reports of destruction across the world for the first time. More than 36,000 people died, mostly from tsunamis triggered by the explosion, while sulfur aerosols lofted into the atmosphere cooled Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures by roughly 0.6°C for years afterward.
