Saarland University releases ExplainDB, an educational Python database system

Researchers at Saarland University's Big Data Analytics Group have published ExplainDB, a teaching DBMS written in Python paired with a set of Jupyter notebooks covering storage, indexing, and query processing. The materials accompany Prof. Jens Dittrich's Database Systems 2024/25 lecture series on YouTube and can be run directly in a browser via mybinder.org without installation.

Show HN: Panel gives Claude Code agents ability to build custom research panes

A new open-source tool called Panel lets developers run an AI agent alongside a research workspace containing chat, files, PDFs and Jupyter notebooks. The agent, currently built on Claude Code, can generate its own custom viewer panes on request when existing panels can't display something, and can run a literature review tool. It's an early-stage build requiring Node, pnpm, uv and a signed-in Claude Code CLI to run locally.
