Independent science lab explores Liesegang ring formation as tabletop chemistry experiment
A researcher at an independent science society describes efforts to recreate Liesegang rings, patterned bands that form in gel with geometric spacing following a (1+p)^n series. The work follows earlier tabletop experiments including Rayleigh-Bénard convection cells using mica powder and oil, and an unsuccessful attempt at the Briggs-Rauscher oscillating reaction. The goal is identifying which variables control these self-organizing, non-equilibrium chemical phenomena.
