Researchers dump original PS2 SPC970 security chip firmware for the first time

Hobbyist researchers have extracted and published firmware images from the SPC970, the original MechaCon security chip used in the earliest PlayStation 2 models (2000-2003). Unlike the later Dragon-based MechaCon, which was cracked by the MechaPwn exploit shortly after 2021's firmware leak, the SPC970's code had never been readable until now, leaving roughly 20 early PS2 model numbers without a chip-level unlock.

Reverse engineers finally dump PlayStation 2's MechaCon security chip

After a four-year effort, researcher DiscoStarslayer, working with developer Libby, successfully decapped and optically dumped the firmware of the PS2's MechaCon chip, a feat no one had achieved in the console's 26-year history. The pair used an exploit Libby discovered to extract the firmware and are now documenting metadata and hashes, with a full technical write-up promised soon.
