JWST spots unexplained emission line in seemingly empty patch of Fornax field

A team led by University of Minnesota astrophysicist Mason Huberty used the James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Spectrograph to survey a region near roughly 10,000 galaxies in the Fornax constellation. In a spot they expected to be empty, they detected a single emission line twice, in August and November 2023, with no matching galaxy or accompanying emission lines, and no sign of it in earlier observations. The findings are published in The Astrophysical Journal.
