Researchers cite giant coconut crabs as hazard in new Earhart plane search

A team planning to investigate a suspected Amelia Earhart crash site on a remote Pacific island says large, meat-eating coconut crabs pose enough of a risk that expedition members will not be able to camp overnight on the island. The crabs are reportedly known to scavenge on remains, complicating efforts to search the site safely.

Bearded capuchins in Brazil hunt small animals when fruit runs low, study finds

Researchers studying bearded capuchin monkeys at Fazenda Boa Vista in northeastern Brazil observed the primates supplementing their mostly plant-based diet with snakes, opossums, iguanas, bats, rodents and bird eggs when fruit and nuts became scarce. The findings, published August 26 in PLOS One, came from two decades of field observations originally focused on the monkeys' tool use.
