Across the northeastern United States, numerous small, often obsolete dams on streams and rivers are being torn down, reopening historic migration routes for river herring and other fish. The removals, less publicized than high-profile Western dam demolitions, are occurring piecemeal across the region as agencies and conservation groups target structures that block fish passage.

From 2001 to 2015, pilots in white hooded costumes flew open-cockpit ultralights to teach captive-raised whooping crane chicks a migration route between Wisconsin and Florida, since the species had lost its eastern migratory tradition. The method worked technically, successfully guiding birds that had never flown the route before, but the program was ultimately shut down.

Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 built by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo Inc., announced it will cease operations on Dec. 15, 2026, giving more than 144 deployed apps roughly two months to migrate. Users must move funds via Abstract's Migration Hub or Native Bridge, which has a three-hour delay, and any funds not bridged by the deadline will be lost. Researchers led by Carter et al., writing in Nature, compared gut microbiota of Tanzania's Hadza people with Bolivia's Tsimane people, whose ancestors diverged tens of thousands of years ago. They found hundreds of microbial species common to both groups, with genetic differences between strains aligning with the timing of prehistoric human migrations. Many of these shared microbes are now rare or absent in people living in industrialized regions.

The Rust version now powers Copilot across VS Code, Visual Studio, the CLI, SDK, and Office apps like Excel and Outlook.

Ornithologist Péter Palatitz has spent 20 years studying the red-footed falcon, a colonial raptor that depends on abandoned rook nests to breed. After rook persecution in the 1980s and '90s destroyed those nesting sites and cut falcon numbers to a quarter of their former size, Palatitz began installing thousands of artificial nest boxes across Hungary in 2006, and the falcon population doubled within ten years. Satellite tracking of 28 birds also revealed they fly nonstop across the Mediterranean and Sahara for five days, covering 6,000 miles to winter in southern Africa.
