Alibaba Cloud has launched Qwen Image 2.1, an open-weight image generation model with only 7 billion parameters, small enough to run on older consumer GPUs like the RTX 3090. The model adds native transparent-background generation and can combine up to 10 reference images into a single consistent output, and Alibaba's own benchmarks claim it outperforms closed models including Google's Nano Banana 2.0. Unlike its predecessor, the new licensing terms bar commercial resale without a separate agreement from Alibaba.

A security researcher tested how generative AI models behave when fed their own outputs repeatedly, using Nano Banana 2 to make a video poster undergo successive localized edits until the image degraded into visual noise. Testing the same recursive approach on text rewrites, the researcher found that unlike images, text doesn't spiral into total chaos because encoding is lossless and per-token entropy is low—but open-ended rewrites still drift substantially from the original, eventually stabilizing into a distinct, homogenized style.

Google has made Dreambeans, an AI-powered app that mines Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube and search history for personalized suggestions, available to free Google Account holders in the US after previously charging for it. The app uses Google's Personal Intelligence feature to generate a limited daily set of 10 to 14 story-like recommendations, each illustrated with AI-generated artwork rather than stock photos, and includes a chat tool for follow-up questions and feedback controls to refine future suggestions.
