1878 book recounts Nathaniel Bishop's 2,500-mile paper canoe voyage from Quebec to the Gulf of Mexico

Nathaniel H. Bishop's book 'Voyage of the Paper Canoe,' published by Lee and Shepard in 1878, describes a journey he began on July 4, 1874, starting in Quebec with one assistant in an 18-foot wooden canoe. After about 400 miles he reached Troy, New York, where he switched to a 58-pound paper canoe made by E. Waters & Sons, dismissed his companion, and paddled roughly 2,000 more miles alone to finish the trip to the Gulf of Mexico by 1875.
