Scaleout Systems deploys lightweight AI models for autonomous drone targeting via NATO DIANA program

Swedish startup Scaleout Systems, born from Uppsala University research in 2018, has shifted its machine learning work from commercial vehicles toward military applications following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The company now builds compact computer vision models that run directly on drones, pilot tablets, and field command hardware to detect and select targets, and has joined NATO's DIANA accelerator program for a project called Federated Aerial Intelligence for Recon.

NATO allies say they detected Russian sub exercise targeting Svalbard undersea cables

A Reuters report says a joint US, UK, and Norwegian naval operation this spring detected Russian submarines rehearsing the use of an undisclosed device meant to disable undersea cables without leaving traceable damage. The exercise reportedly took place near Norway's Svalbard archipelago, where two 1,400km cables running nearly 3km deep link the islands to the mainland. No cables were actually harmed, and officials describe the Russian activity as a simulation for use in a potential future conflict with NATO.
