Astronauts on NASA's Artemis II mission used Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras, GoPro Hero4s for interior and exterior video, and iPhone 17 Pro Max phones to document the flight around the moon. Nikon senior manager Michael Corrado described the certification process required for equipment to fly in space and explained why much of the gear astronauts use is years old.
Nikon introduced the Z5 IIC, a $1,399.95 variant of its Z5 II full-frame camera, priced $450 lower than the original. It keeps the same 24.5-megapixel sensor, EXPEED 7 processor, in-body stabilization, and burst shooting speeds, but drops the electronic viewfinder, reduces the touchscreen resolution, cuts the dual card slots to one, and removes the joystick control.
Nikon announced the Z5 IIC, a 24-megapixel mirrorless camera that strips out the electronic viewfinder from the Z5 II to cut cost, weight, and size. At 537 grams it's about 25% lighter than the Z5 II while keeping most features, including internal RAW video, in-body stabilization, and a fully articulating touchscreen.
Ning Xu, an optical engineer at Tsinghua University in Beijing, won Nikon's 2023 Small World in Motion competition with a super-resolution video capturing the abnormal beating of airway cilia in a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). His entry topped 346 submissions from 40 countries in the contest, which is a video-focused offshoot of Nikon's long-running Small World Photomicrography Competition.
