ArXiv announced multiyear philanthropic commitments totaling $17.2 million from Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets, and Siegel Family Endowment. The funding, pledged over three to five years, will back arXiv's transition into an independent nonprofit organization, covering technical infrastructure, daily operations, and services for researchers worldwide.
The Internet Archive page for Isaac Asimov's classic 1958 short story 'The Feeling of Power' is accompanied by a fundraising message from the nonprofit, asking readers to support its free-access mission. The organization notes it relies on small donations, averaging about $14, rather than advertising or selling user data to fund its operations.
Microsoft ended free premium Office licenses for smaller nonprofits worldwide, and many organizations discovered their stored data—including Word, Excel, and OneDrive files—had been permanently deleted without adequate warning. Ronald Khosla, who runs the environmental venture fund Canopy, says he was told by Microsoft support that his data could be recovered, only to later learn it was gone for good.
