Oil Spill

Study: Gulf of Mexico deep-sea species still down 60% since 2010 BP spill

A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that populations of octopus, squid, krill, shrimp, and lanternfish in the Gulf of Mexico fell by at least 60 percent in the years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster and have shown little sign of recovery 16 years later. Researchers based the findings on acoustic surveys and thousands of net samples across a wide area of the deep sea, and also documented reduced genetic diversity in affected populations.
