The ShinyHunters extortion group told BleepingComputer it exploited a new remote-code-execution flaw in Oracle PeopleSoft to access FBI systems and move into FBI-managed AWS GovCloud infrastructure, claiming theft of 2-3TB of data including employee, applicant, HR and Medlink records. The group shared a screenshot showing the FBI Jobs site defaced with its logo and a message asserting sensitive PII/PHI had been stolen, and said the FBI quickly took the affected systems offline.

AI-Assisted Bug Hunting Triggers Record Surge in Software Vulnerability Disclosures

Major tech firms including Microsoft, Oracle and Google reported unprecedented numbers of security patches this year, with Microsoft issuing 974 CVE fixes this month alone and Oracle shipping 1,448 patches in July compared to 309 a year earlier. Analysts tracking cve.icu counted 66,401 confirmed vulnerabilities as of this week, nearly double last September's tally, a jump attributed largely to AI tools now used for automated bug discovery.

Wall Street questions durability of AI data center spending boom

Investors are increasingly scrutinizing whether the massive data center buildout tied to Anthropic and OpenAI's growth can continue at its current pace, given uncertainty around future AI model progress. Companies like Oracle, GE Vernova, Caterpillar, Vertiv, Nebius, CoreWeave, Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise have all made major bets tied to sustained AI infrastructure demand.

MIT economists warn AI data center spending needs 2.7x productivity gains to pay off by 2030

Research led by former SEC chief economist Susan Wachter finds that hyperscalers—Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Oracle—must boost their own productivity nearly threefold by 2030 to cover the cost of the roughly $5 trillion they're projected to spend on AI infrastructure over four years. Current AI revenues sit around $150-200 billion annually, far short of the buildout's scale, according to former SEC chair Gary Gensler.

Oracle pledges 2GW of renewable projects amid backlash over Project Jupiter data center in New Mexico

Oracle has requested proposals for 2 gigawatts of renewable energy in New Mexico as it faces local protests and legal challenges over the $165 billion Project Jupiter data center it's building with OpenAI in Santa Teresa. The facility, part of the Stargate AI infrastructure initiative, will still run on natural gas-powered fuel cells rather than direct renewable power, and analysts note the renewable investment is a 'synthetic' match rather than a direct power source for the site.

Oracle Earnings and Hot Inflation Data Dominate Friday's Market Session

The August consumer price index rose 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% annually, matching analyst forecasts, while core CPI ticked up slightly more than expected at 0.3%. The reading follows Thursday's hotter-than-anticipated producer price index and a surge in crude oil to $6 a gallon, pushing traders to raise the odds of a quarter-point Fed rate hike next week above 70%. Stock futures rose Friday morning as investors weighed the data and looked to snap a four-session losing streak, with Oracle's earnings also drawing market attention.
