Oxfam: Richest 0.1% emit more carbon than poorest 3.5 billion combined

A new Oxfam analysis, released ahead of COP31 in Türkiye, finds that the world's wealthiest 8 million people produce more carbon pollution than the poorest 3.5 billion people combined. Oxfam says a person in this top 0.1% has contributed nearly 400 times more to current extreme heatwaves than someone in the poorest half of humanity, and that this group alone emits over three times more than all of Sub-Saharan Africa's 1.3 billion residents. The report also introduces a 'Destroy & Rebuild Index' tracking how wealthy investors in polluting industries are also profiting from disaster recovery and preparedness businesses.
