Early DVD releases feature evolving interactive menus and resolution standards

As DVD technology gained popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s, publishers began to incorporate elaborate interactive menus, moving away from the straightforward content access of earlier releases. The standard resolutions for NTSC and PAL regions, 720×480 and 720×576 pixels respectively, are rooted in the D-1 digital video standard, with aspect ratios adapting to the shift from 4:3 to 16:9 screens. These technical choices influenced how DVDs were formatted and presented to viewers worldwide.

Fujifilm launches Instax Pal 2 with USB-C phone connection and swappable filters

Fujifilm has unveiled the Instax Pal 2, a compact digital camera that builds on the original Pal by adding tactile controls, downloadable color filters and a horizontal, Charmera-like design. It packs a 1/3.06-inch CMOS sensor that shoots either 10MP or 1MP images, an f/2.2 aperture and LED flash, and lets users transfer photos to a phone via a built-in USB-C port or Bluetooth.

PAL-XFEL study maps ultrafast atomic motions during azobenzene light-switching

Researchers used time-resolved X-ray liquidography at South Korea's PAL-XFEL free-electron laser facility to track the structural changes azobenzene molecules undergo when switched from trans to cis form by a laser pulse. The experiment combined a 400 nm pump laser with X-ray probe pulses to capture molecular motion with a measured time resolution of about 169 femtoseconds, using a single-pass capillary jet of the dissolved sample rather than a recirculated solution.

Fujifilm launches Instax Pal 2 pocket camera with screen and 10MP sensor

Fujifilm has unveiled the Instax Pal 2, a successor to its palm-sized Instax Pal camera, adding an optical viewfinder and a 1.3-inch LCD screen missing from the original. The camera uses a small sensor paired with an f/2.2 28mm lens to shoot up to 10-megapixel images and will launch in the US later this month for $169.95.
