Researchers examining 53 skipjack tuna caught off southern Brazil found over 1,600 worms infesting nearly every organ, according to a report in Ocean and Coastal Research. Only the kidneys and hearts were free of parasites, while flatworms and roundworms were found throughout the muscle tissue people typically eat.
Researchers at the Federal University of Santa Catarina examined 53 skipjack tuna caught off southern Brazil and found more than 1,600 worms across the fish, with 96% carrying at least one parasite. The intestines were most heavily infested, followed by the edible muscle tissue and the stomach, while only the heart and kidneys were consistently parasite-free. The team identified two dominant parasite genera, Trypanorhyncha and Anisakis, and published the findings in Ocean and Coastal Research.
