6K, a 12-year-old startup based in North Andover, Massachusetts, said Thursday it received conditional approval for a $250 million Department of Defense loan to build a battery materials factory in Tennessee. The plant will use the company's microwave-based plasma process to produce cathode material without relying on Chinese suppliers. 6K had previously secured a $50 million Energy Department grant in 2023 that the Trump administration later canceled, pushing back the factory's original 2024 opening target.
