Physical Intelligence opens API beta for fine-tuning its robot foundation models

Physical Intelligence has launched a beta API that lets developers upload data, fine-tune the company's π0 and π0.5 robotic foundation models on managed compute, and access the resulting models through a hosted gateway for inference. The company says the system removes the need for developers to build their own ML infrastructure or data pipelines when adapting general-purpose robot models to new tasks, environments, or hardware. It is testing the API with partner companies across industries to gauge how broadly the models generalize.

Why humanoid robots still lag far behind AI's software progress

Despite rapid advances in AI for knowledge work like chatbots, physical AI embodied in humanoid robots remains largely confined to test labs and curated demo videos rather than real-world deployment. Unlike ChatGPT, there is no widely accessible robot product, and demo footage is often edited or cherry-picked, making it hard to gauge true progress. Even public showcases like the World Humanoid Robot Games reveal a mix of impressive feats and notable failures.
