Scientists revive pig kidneys frozen for over a year, successfully transplant them

Researchers cryopreserved pig kidneys in a glass-like frozen state—one for more than a year—then rewarmed and tested them before transplanting them into pigs. The organs regained color and produced urine, indicating they functioned after transplant. The team says it is a major step but still needs to determine whether the technique translates to human organs.

University of Minnesota team revives pig kidneys after a year of cryopreservation

Researchers led by transplant surgeon Erik Finger successfully transplanted pig kidneys that had been frozen for a year, restoring their function in recipient animals. The findings, posted on preprint server bioRxiv, have not yet been peer-reviewed, and the team has not yet shown the organs can sustain life over an extended period.
