Former President Barack Obama said he does not view artificial intelligence with alarmist pessimism, positioning himself between AI optimists and doomsayers. He aligned with a cohort of liberal politicians who advocate cautious oversight of AI development rather than either unchecked growth or outright fear-driven restriction.
Several AI industry leaders have publicly urged a slower pace of AI development, citing safety and societal risk concerns. Lawmakers and policymakers, however, have largely declined to act on these calls, continuing to prioritize competitive advancement over caution.
New research by Benjamin Shultz, published by think tank Agora Digitale Transformation, analyzed about 160 websites hosting nonconsensual deepfake sexual content and found 138 women members of parliament from 22 EU countries were referenced or depicted, compared with just nine men. The study covered over 5,800 national lawmakers across the EU, with politicians from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and France most frequently appearing.
Labor unions are increasingly pushing back against data-center construction, warning politicians who support these projects that they risk losing union backing. The move signals that blue-collar workforce concerns are becoming a central point of contention in the broader public backlash against data-center expansion.
