Google has rolled out new infrastructure aimed at supporting agentic commerce, where AI agents complete purchases on behalf of users. A payments infrastructure veteran notes that the underlying payment systems for this technology remain unresolved, echoing a recurring pattern where new commerce tech launches on rails not built for it.
Rails 8.0, released in November 2024 with built-in authentication, Solid Queue/Cache/Cable, Kamal 2 deployment and production-ready SQLite, is now down to security-only fixes that end November 7, 2026. Rails 8.1, released in October 2025, is the actively maintained version, while Rails 7.1 and 7.2 have already fallen out of support entirely.
Security firm Rietta rolled out an emergency hotfix across its client base on July 29, 2026, after a Ruby on Rails ActiveStorage vulnerability—later named KindaRails2Shell and tracked as CVE-2026-66066—jumped from an unrated update to a 9.5/10 CVSS severity score within hours. The flaw, discovered by researchers at Ethiack, allows arbitrary file read and remote code execution through variant processing in Active Storage, a core Rails component used in Rails 8 and newer.
