WIRED's wearables reviewer tested Apple's current three-model Watch lineup—Series 12, Ultra 4, and SE 3—and named the Series 12 the best overall choice. The Series 12 introduces a new Health Sensing System with a 32-electrode ECG, more frequent heart-rate and HRV tracking, a new Readiness score, and Audio Intelligence features, alongside faster charging and satellite connectivity that the Series 11 lacked.
Apple's Series 12 smartwatch introduces a single-tap hand gesture for navigating Smart Stack widgets alongside existing double-tap and wrist-flick controls. It also debuts a new Health Sensing System with 32 ECG electrodes, ring-arranged photodiodes, and larger LEDs, enabling heart rate readings every five seconds and HRV readings every five minutes, up from every five minutes and two hours respectively on Series 11. The new S11 chip also improves step-tracking accuracy and adds a real-time Steps complication to the watch face.
Apple used its Surprise and Shine event to introduce a redesigned Health app powered by Apple Intelligence, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, AirPods 5 and Apple Watch Ultra 4/Series 12. The app adds a Longevity tab showing a calculated 'health age,' an Insights tab, AI-based movement tests for strength and balance, and paid blood tests through Quest Diagnostics starting at $119. The Apple Watch Series 12 also gains a Readiness score using sleep, activity and vitals data to recommend how hard users should push themselves each day.
