MIT Technology Review to host live discussion on AI extinction risk; researcher's eye age-reversal therapy enters human trials

MIT Technology Review is holding a subscriber-only roundtable on September 15 with editors and an AI reporter to examine claims that artificial intelligence poses an extinction-level threat to humanity. Separately, the outlet profiles geneticist Yuancheng (Ryan) Lu, whose cellular reprogramming technique reversed blindness in mice by repairing optic nerves, and reports that a similar gene therapy has now moved into human clinical trials. Lu was also named to the publication's 2026 list of top young innovators in biotechnology and health.

Life Biosciences begins human trial of Yuancheng Lu's age-reversal gene therapy for glaucoma

Geneticist Yuancheng Lu, working in David Sinclair's Harvard lab, developed a reprogramming gene therapy in 2018 that regenerated crushed optic nerves in mice and restored their vision. That same therapy, now called ER-100, has been adapted for humans by the startup Life Biosciences, which in June injected it into the eye of a glaucoma patient as part of a clinical trial.
