Retinal Regeneration

1 GoKawiil brief on this topic

Mouse Müller glia accumulate Prox1 protein after retinal injury, unlike zebrafish

Researchers found that Prox1, a protein normally present at low levels in mouse Müller glia (MG), rises sharply after retinal damage caused by chemicals like MNU and NMDA, light exposure, or genetically triggered photoreceptor loss. The increase scaled with injury severity and was specific to MG, while other retinal cell types showed no change. By contrast, equivalent injuries in zebrafish—whose Müller glia can regenerate retinal neurons—did not raise Prox1 levels.
