Room Acoustics

2 GoKawiil briefs on this topic

Audio expert Anthony Grimani shares simple fixes for better home surround sound

Sound engineer Anthony Grimani explains that room acoustics, not expensive equipment, are usually the biggest factor hurting home theater sound quality. Hard surfaces like bare walls and tile floors reflect sound waves, causing echo and muddled audio, but simple additions like rugs, curtains and framed art can absorb those reflections. He also outlines proper speaker placement and angling for both 5.1 and 7.1 setups.

Subwoofer placement, not facing direction, determines bass quality

Audio guidance clarifies that most subwoofers are nearly omnidirectional because bass frequencies spread as long, powerful waves rather than beaming like tweeters or midrange speakers. As a result, which way a subwoofer physically faces has little effect on sound quality compared to where it sits in the room. The main exception is ported subwoofers, which need clear space around their vents to perform properly.
