Russia quarantines hospitals after plague researcher's death in Irkutsk region

Darya Shipilova, a researcher at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, died last week of pneumonia whose cause officials initially called unknown. Russian authorities have placed roughly 200 people under medical observation, isolated dozens more, and quarantined several hospitals amid unconfirmed reports she had been exposed to Yersinia pestis, the plague bacterium, after breaking a test tube on September 25.

A laboratory employee at the Irkutsk anti-plague institute, identified as 27- or 28-year-old Daria Sh., died Thursday after contracting plague, reportedly after breaking a test tube of live bacteria while collecting samples. She had been hospitalized Tuesday in Shelekhov with severe pneumonia and placed on a ventilator before her death. Nearly 200 people are now under medical observation as a precaution.
