Seagate and Toshiba compete to acquire TDK's HDD magnetic-head division

Seagate and Toshiba are engaged in a bidding war to purchase TDK's remaining HDD magnetic-head manufacturing business. Toshiba has been in talks with TDK since earlier this year, while Seagate submitted a higher offer during the summer, with the deal valued at several billion dollars. The outcome could significantly impact the supply chain for major HDD makers, especially as industry demand surges due to AI-driven data storage needs.

Seagate, Toshiba reportedly vie to buy TDK's HDD magnetic head unit

Bloomberg reports Seagate Technology and Toshiba are competing to acquire TDK's hard disk drive magnetic head business in a deal said to be worth several billion dollars. TDK is currently the only independent maker of these components and Toshiba's sole supplier, while Seagate and Western Digital build heads in-house but also buy from TDK for extra capacity. According to the report, Toshiba approached TDK about the unit in spring 2026, after which Seagate entered the bidding.

Newegg Offers $0.02/GB Deal on 16TB Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive

Newegg has discounted the 16TB Seagate Expansion Desktop external drive by $100, reducing its price to $449.99. The drive, which likely contains a 5,400 RPM HDD such as Barracuda or IronWolf Pro, offers a cost-effective storage solution at approximately $0.02 per GB, though its speed is limited by the drive's rotational speed and interface. Users can remove the enclosure to install the drive internally, but this voids the warranty and may not improve performance significantly for modern gaming or high-speed applications.

IEEE names 2027 Technical Field Award recipients across medicine, storage, and controls

IEEE announced its 2027 Technical Field Award winners, honoring researchers for advances including therapeutic ultrasound, heat-assisted magnetic recording for hard drives, and nonlinear control theory. Recipients include Kullervo Hynynen of Sunnybrook Research Institute and the University of Toronto, a Seagate Technology team led by Edward Charles Gage, and Arjan van der Schaft of the University of Groningen. IEEE president and CEO Mary Ellen Randall said the honorees reflect innovation spanning microelectronics, AI, medical robotics, wireless networks, energy conversion, and technical education.

Seagate survey: 62% of firms unprepared for AI-driven storage growth

Seagate Technology's 2026 Data Infrastructure Readiness Report, based on a survey of 2,712 enterprise IT decision-makers across seven countries, found that 99% expect AI to increase storage needs over the next three years, with nearly a third anticipating growth exceeding 50%. Yet only 38% of organizations feel their infrastructure can actually keep pace with that demand.
