California's Public Employment Relations Board has officially certified the California Gig Workers Union as the bargaining representative for Uber and Lyft drivers, after at least 30% of active drivers showed support. The certification was enabled by Assembly Bill 1340, which grants independent contractor drivers the right to collectively bargain, making California the third state after Washington and Massachusetts to allow such unionization.
Security personnel working at San Francisco offices of major AI firms, represented by SEIU-United Service Workers West, voted this week to authorize a strike. The vote gives union leadership the go-ahead to call a walkout if labor negotiations with contractors fail to produce an acceptable deal.
Anthropic instructed employees at its San Francisco offices to work remotely on Monday and Tuesday after its security staffing firm, Allied Universal, warned of a potential strike. The SEIU union representing those security workers told Business Insider it has issued no strike threat or authorization vote, and is still in contract talks with Allied over wages, healthcare and training.
