Nintendo has told customers it plans to keep selling physical game cartridges for its consoles, even as Sony moves toward phasing out physical discs for PlayStation titles. Nintendo's reassurance follows gamer backlash against Sony's shift toward digital-only distribution.

Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro is out of stock on Sony.com and reselling above $1,100 on auction sites, amid anticipation for GTA 6's Nov. 19 launch. Sony reportedly told distributors in September that the console would remain in short supply until 2027, citing market constraints and a global memory and storage component shortage linked to AI infrastructure demand.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that US Xbox retail sales have fallen 33% year-to-date, an all-time low for the platform, while PS5 sales dropped 25%, the weakest showing since 2013. Both Microsoft and Sony have raised console prices multiple times over the past two years, with the Xbox Series X now reaching $799.99 and the PS5 Pro priced at $899.99.
Sony has informed distribution partners that supply constraints and high demand for the PS5 Pro will continue limiting retailer stock through at least 2027, according to German outlet Playfront. The console, originally priced at $699.99, now carries an MSRP roughly $200 higher, while resellers have listed units for as much as $1,539 at retailers like Best Buy.
Sony has raised PlayStation 5 pricing in stages since its 2020 launch, when the Disc Edition cost $499 and the Digital Edition cost $399. After a 2023 Slim redesign, an August 2025 $50 increase, and a further $100 hike in April 2026, the consoles now retail at $650 and $600 respectively. The PS5 Pro has also climbed, from $700 at its 2024 launch to $900 after the same 2026 increases.
GameStop is selling a used PlayStation 5 Pro for $1,399.99, roughly $500 above Sony's $899.99 list price, as a global shortage of the console continues. Sony has blamed AI-driven silicon demand for production constraints expected to persist into 2027, and other resellers are reportedly charging similarly inflated prices.
According to ZDNet Korea, Sony and Meta signed a Confirmatory Assignment agreement in December 2025 transferring 419 VR, AR, and XR patents developed by Sony between 2010 and 2022. The portfolio includes 180 US patents, with the rest registered across Japan, China, South Korea, Europe and other regions. Sony has not publicly commented on the transfer.
A project called AnyPS5 has demonstrated PlayStation 5 exclusive games, including Dead Cells, running natively on standard PCs, according to Ars Technica. Social media videos show the emulator making rapid progress, raising the prospect that current-generation console exclusives could soon be playable outside Sony hardware.
