Startup Subvocal opens pre-orders for radar-based silent-speech glasses

Subvocal has begun taking pre-orders for a wearable that uses radio signals, rather than cameras or electrodes, to detect mouth and tongue muscle movement and convert silently mouthed words into text. The company says shipments are expected to begin in Q1 2027. The approach draws on prior research from MIT Media Lab's AlterEgo project, which used electrodes instead of radar.

YC-backed startup Subvocal builds smart glasses that transcribe silent, unspoken speech

The Subvocal Company, a Y Combinator F26 startup founded by Georgia Tech students Aarush and Arnav, has built prototype smart glasses that use radio-frequency sensing to decode silent or mouthed speech into text in real time. The founders say the device works even without visible lip movement, after earlier attempts using EMG facial electrodes proved unreliable due to sweat, interference and placement issues.
