Tesla has started delivering its first all-electric Semi trucks to customers, nearly ten years after unveiling the vehicle in 2017. The trucks are being built at a new factory next to Tesla's Reno Gigafactory, which the company says can produce up to 50,000 units a year and will create 3,000 local jobs. The top-range Semi is expected to travel 500-plus miles per charge and cost just under $300,000 before incentives.
Tesla held an invite-only launch event in Sparks, Nevada, marking the start of high-volume production of its Tesla Semi truck, first unveiled as a concept in 2017. Vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy confirmed the long-range version will travel roughly 500 miles per charge, with a standard version rated at about 325 miles. Elon Musk appeared only in a pre-recorded video, having skipped the event to attend a White House state dinner.
Tesla held a ribbon-cutting for its first high-volume Semi manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada, nearly a decade after unveiling the heavy-duty electric truck. The company has already secured commitments including a 2,500-truck order from industry coalition ZET SCALE and a 500-truck order from trucking firm Einride, with deliveries beginning this month.
