Developer builds Tasfer, a text editor rendered entirely on HTML5 canvas

A developer built Tasfer, a text editor that bypasses the browser's contentEditable API and instead renders every character, cursor, selection and line break itself on an HTML5 canvas. A hidden input field still captures keystrokes so native typing, autocorrect and Arabic or Chinese input methods continue to work, but the browser no longer controls how anything appears on screen. The creator says an earlier attempt used WebGL and WebGPU to render text like a game engine before settling on 2D canvas as sufficient and faster to ship.

Pragtical v3.14 editor adds menus, floating command prompts, session support

The open-source Lua-based Pragtical text editor has released version 3.14.0, adding traditional File/Edit/Search/View/Tools/Help menus, a borderless window mode with an embedded menu bar, movable toolbar positions, and configurable placement for the command palette and project search. The update also introduces workspace session management, a redesigned Plugin Manager, and reduced idle CPU usage compared with v3.13.1.

Developer says Google Play rejected app over unrelated NSFW screenshot

A developer working with a batch of old Android 6.0.1 devices describes turning to lightweight, de-googled software after finding the experience surprisingly enjoyable. When attempting to publish a text editor called Tabby on the Play Store, the app was rejected and Google attached a screenshot from an unrelated app containing explicit content as justification; an appeal was denied without explanation. The developer suspects the issue may stem from Google's automatic listing translations linking to a dubious site, and plans to distribute apps via F-Droid and itch.io instead.

Google's Text editor app for Googlebooks surfaces early, running on Android phones and tablets

Ahead of the October 4 launch of Google's new Googlebook laptops, Android Authority managed to install and run the platform's first-party Text editor app on an Android phone and tablet. The app supports extensive syntax highlighting for languages including Python, JavaScript, Kotlin, Java, C++, Rust and Go, plus a find-and-replace tool, and adapts its layout to make better use of larger tablet screens.

New terminal text editor 'txt' targets developers who avoid modal editing

A developer released txt, a lightweight, keyboard-driven text editor built to run directly in the terminal without configuration or a modal input system. It uses tree-sitter for syntax highlighting across many languages, supports code folding, and includes a fuzzy symbol picker for navigating functions and classes within a file.
