University of Michigan study: El Niño pattern strongest in 1,000 years, coral data shows

Researchers at the University of Michigan reconstructed ocean surface temperatures over the past millennium using fossilized corals from the Galápagos Islands, concluding that the current El Niño event is the most intense on record for that timeframe. The findings suggest the phenomenon could drive more extreme weather across the U.S., particularly during hurricane season.

1,000-year coral record links rising El Niño intensity to human-driven warming

Palaeoclimatologist Julia Cole and colleagues reconstructed a millennium of sea surface temperatures using Galápagos coral skeletons, published in Science. They found that strong El Niño events have occurred more often over the past century, since industrial-era greenhouse gas emissions began, than in the thousand years before it.
