Meta adds opt-out for AI training on smart glasses visual data

Meta is rolling out a new privacy setting in the Meta AI app that lets smart glasses owners opt out of having their 'visual data' used to train the company's AI models. The setting is found under each glasses pair's Meta AI settings and requires the device to be connected to a phone. Meta says opting out means the data won't be stored after processing, but it will disable some features, such as visual reminders based on objects a user has looked at.

Meta announced it will let smart glasses owners opt out of having images and video captured during Meta AI interactions used to train its AI models. Previously, camera captures triggered by voice commands like asking Meta AI to identify an object were stored and sometimes reviewed by third-party contractors abroad for labeling, even though they weren't saved to users' camera rolls. The opt-out applies only to visual data; audio interactions with Meta AI can still be used for training, though users can manually delete those recordings.
