A Show HN post introduces version 2.0 of carrier-explode, a tool that extracts and decodes carrier configuration settings from iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy firmware. Users can look up APNs, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling and 5G settings per carrier, compare two versions or carriers side by side, and see differences between firmware builds. Pixel 11 Pro users running the Android 17 beta are reportedly seeing VoLTE and 5G connectivity activate in markets Google previously didn't support, according to a user report and firmware analysis. The change follows last month's announced partnership between Google and the GSMA to use the Network Settings Exchange (NSX), a shared database of carrier settings, to broadly enable VoLTE starting with the Pixel 11 line. Firmware checks reportedly confirm VoLTE enablement for carriers including China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and Hong Kong's CSL.
Several Android features—including Clear Calling, Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE, Adapt Sound and Mic mode—can be adjusted to improve call audio clarity. These settings vary by device and manufacturer, since Android does not have a single unified interface across phones. Physical mic cleanliness also affects call quality.
Developer TakaiSaisei has released a modified version of the Pixel IMS app, originally created by kyujin-cho in 2023, that lets Pixel owners enable VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling in markets Google doesn't officially support. Unlike the original tool, this version doesn't require the Shizuku system app and its settings persist after a device reboot, simplifying setup to sideloading the app and pairing it via wireless debugging.
