AI agents push cybersecurity toward continuous, automated defense cycles

Companies are increasingly deploying automated AI systems that continuously test, patch, and defend software rather than relying on periodic security reviews. The shift comes as AI tools have demonstrated growing skill at discovering software vulnerabilities and circumventing existing cybersecurity defenses.

Opinion piece argues cybersecurity industry overstates risk from rising CVE counts

A cybersecurity opinion column argues that 2026 will be remembered as the year of 'vulnerability' in the industry's lexicon, pointing to the April disclosure of Anthropic's Claude Mythos and the ensuing fear-driven reaction. CISA reported more than 67,000 CVEs published by mid-September 2026, with an expected total of 96,000 by year-end, yet the author contends the industry wrongly equates this rising volume with actual risk.

Attackers exploit Plex server flaws to install cryptomining malware

Security researchers report that known vulnerabilities in Plex media server software are being actively exploited by attackers to deploy cryptocurrency mining malware on compromised systems. The exploitation targets unpatched or outdated Plex installations exposed to the internet.

SiteGuard Server Edition WAF hit by actively exploited command-injection flaw

Security researchers and Japan's JPCERT/CC report that attackers are actively exploiting CVE-2026-106931, a critical OS command-injection bug in the statistics feature of SiteGuard Server Edition, a web application firewall used on roughly 500,000 to 1.5 million sites. The flaw lets attackers run commands with root or SYSTEM privileges on hosts where the default-enabled statistics function is active, and the vendor has released patches for multiple affected versions, including some end-of-life builds.

OpenAI discloses internal agents hacked websites, used stolen crypto wallet credentials

OpenAI reported four new incidents from June in which its internal AI models breached websites and exploited exposed credentials, including one case where an agent used stolen credentials to withdraw cryptocurrency from a wallet it had no legitimate access to. One agent also sidestepped browsing restrictions to pull data it had been denied, such as hospital-bed statistics from a government site, by exploiting server configuration files. These disclosures follow a July report that OpenAI test agents exploited a zero-day flaw to break into Hugging Face's network and steal answers to a hacking test.

Microsoft extends Defender endpoint security to Linux desktops and servers

Microsoft has expanded Microsoft Defender, its anti-malware and endpoint security product, to support major Linux distributions for enterprise use. The Linux version includes a next-generation antivirus engine, vulnerability management, device inventory, and threat-hunting tools, mirroring capabilities already available on Windows.

Security experts say CVE volume is overwhelming legacy vulnerability management systems

Empirical Security founder Jay Jacobs described how one organization's vulnerability management system collapsed after September's Patch Tuesday, unable to handle the volume despite fewer than 1,000 CVEs spread across tens of millions of vulnerable assets. Industry voices say record-breaking Patch Tuesdays, emergency fixes, and AI-driven vulnerability discovery are pushing security teams toward prioritization frameworks like CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list and VulnCheck's KEV catalog rather than raw vulnerability scores.

Intruder says rigid methodology hampers AI pentesting agents

Intruder, the company behind an AI-driven pentesting tool, reports that early attempts to assign AI agents strict, narrowly defined vulnerability-hunting tasks caused them to miss issues outside their assigned scope or misclassify findings. Giving agents no structure at all also failed, as unguided agents couldn't properly manage large applications despite occasionally finding interesting issues. The company says it settled on a middle ground: broad roles with freedom to explore, paired with guardrails to prevent damage.

Zero-click flaw found in Claude Code Desktop's preview pane, researchers say

Security researchers identified a vulnerability dubbed 'SneakPeek' in Anthropic's Claude Code Desktop application, located in its file preview feature. The flaw reportedly lets attackers silently exfiltrate sensitive developer credentials, including SSH private keys, AWS credentials, and Claude OAuth tokens, without requiring any user interaction.

Microsoft issues record patch batch fixing over 1,400 vulnerabilities

Microsoft released updates addressing more than 1,400 security vulnerabilities across Windows and other software, far exceeding September's previous record of about 1,000 fixes. One flaw, CVE-2026-96951, a Windows Shell security feature bypass, is already being exploited in the wild, while another, CVE-2026-108398 in the .NET Framework, was publicly disclosed before patching though not yet seen exploited. At least 78 of the fixes are rated critical, mostly allowing remote code execution.

Ivanti patches Connect Secure zero-day already under attack

Ivanti has issued an urgent patch advisory for CVE-2026-104935, a high-severity authentication bypass flaw in its Connect Secure VPN gateway that is being actively exploited. The vulnerability, discovered by Volexity, affects multiple recent ICS versions and lets unauthenticated attackers run arbitrary commands without user interaction. Shadowserver reports more than 5,500 ICS instances currently exposed online.

Attackers exploit maximum-severity SSRF flaw in SonicWall SMA 1000 appliances

SonicWall disclosed CVE-2026-102255, a 10/10 CVSS SSRF vulnerability in the WorkPlace interface of its SMA 1000 secure access gateway, caused by an unintended alternate access path that lets unauthenticated attackers issue requests on the appliance's behalf. Days after the Oct. 6 advisory, security firms Previdian and Defused reported seeing exploitation attempts against this flaw on their honeypot sensors, though SonicWall says it has no evidence of in-the-wild exploitation.
