Traffic to top news sites drops 25% since Google's 2024 AI Overviews rollout

According to data compiled by Axios, monthly visits to the top 100 news sites fell from over 70 million in July 2024 to about 47 million in July 2026. The decline coincides with Google's 2024 introduction of AI Overviews atop search results and Meta's rollout of its own AI assistant, both of which surface summarized content instead of directing users to original articles.

DataDome report: malicious bot traffic rose 124% in past year

DataDome's analysis of over 1 trillion web requests found that bad automated traffic grew 124% between July 2025 and June 2026, far outpacing the growth of human traffic. AI-driven traffic on the web also rose more than 82% over the same period, according to the report.
