Webb telescope traces farthest-known fast radio burst to a small, early-universe galaxy

Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope to identify the galaxy that produced the farthest fast radio burst ever detected, first spotted in 2024 by the MeerKAT array. The source galaxy formed just 3 billion years after the Big Bang and is roughly 1,000 times smaller than galaxies linked to previously known bursts, which occurred billions of years later.

JWST spots 'little red dots' that defy simple black hole explanation

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope had largely concluded that mysterious compact objects called 'little red dots' were supermassive black holes obscured by dust. But two newly analyzed dots studied by teams led by de Graaff and Naidu show a distinctive Balmer break—a spectral signature usually associated with hot stellar surfaces—that standard black hole models don't produce, complicating the picture.
