Study links neural detection of alarm behaviour to fish schooling escape response

Researchers studying zebrafish (referred to in the methods as D. cerebrum) examined how neurons detect social actions of other fish to coordinate group escape responses. The work combined behavioural tracking with brain imaging using a transgenic calcium-indicator line, observing fish from larval stages through adulthood in controlled lab conditions.

Whole-body imaging maps cellular activity across every organ in live fish

Researchers developed a light-sheet microscopy method capable of recording cellular-level activity simultaneously across all organs in larval zebrafish and the small, transparent adult fish species Danionella cerebrum. Using carefully controlled husbandry and automated analysis pipelines, the team was able to track physiological signals body-wide rather than in a single organ, revealing coordinated circuits linking the brain to peripheral tissues.
