TBM 377: Time Allocation ≠ Capacity Allocation

Before we jump in: September Conferences! I’m heading to Enterprise Tech Leadership Summit in Las Vegas: September 23–25, 2025. I’m a huge fan of Gene Kim’s work and the community he has created. Dotwork is sponsoring, so I’ll be “working the booth.” Drop by if you’re around. I’ll also be in Cleveland next week (9th and 10th) for Industry. Would love to meet people in person. Lately, I’ve been researching the mental models, mechanisms, and reporting practices behind ‘capacity’ allocation. At

An Odd Trio of ‘Halloween’ Movies Is Returning to Theaters

The latest movies to come back to theaters are the Halloween franchise, which makes sense since it’s spooky season. But instead of just the original film or the more recent trilogy, we’re getting three installments that’ve been surprisingly grouped together. Along with the original 1978 Halloween, both Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers are also coming back to the big screen. The trio’s cinematic return comes courtesy of Trancas International

Hundreds of Google AI Workers Were Fired Amid Fight Over Working Conditions

More than 200 contractors who worked on evaluating and improving Google’s AI products have been laid off without warning in at least two rounds of layoffs last month. The move comes amid an ongoing fight over pay and working conditions, according to workers who spoke to WIRED. In the past few years, Google has outsourced its AI rating work—which includes evaluating, editing, or rewriting the Gemini chatbot’s response to make it sound more human and “intelligent”—to thousands of contractors empl

Ask HN: Good resources for DIY-ish animatronic kits for Halloween?

Does anyone know of good resources to make your own animatronic Halloween displays? I'm a software engineer, and not skilled in hardware per se. I would love to make some things together with my kids. For reference, they are 8, 10, 12 and VERY smart and they use Ubuntu as their desktop computers and can use flatpak from the command line. Not that I am bragging.... And, I would love to NOT spent $400 on just a single ridiculous junky thing from Lowes, and do that for multiple things. My budget

Contracts for C

C++ seems to finally converge with their contracts proposal, https://wg21.link/p2900. I decided to give it a try and come up with ideas how such a thing would look for C. This is in early stages, not a full proposal yet, and still would need implementation by some of the major compilers. In particular, the C++ feature is full of sidetracks that I don’t like at all, such as user-defined global handlers and ignorability. But there is a core of ideas, syntax and semantics that I found interesting

Default musl allocator considered harmful to performance

TLDR: In a real world benchmark, the default musl allocator caused a 7x slowdown compared to other allocators. I recommend all Rust projects immediately add the following lines to their application’s main.rs : // Avoid musl's default allocator due to lackluster performance // https://nickb.dev/blog/default-musl-allocator-considered-harmful-to-performance #[cfg(target_env = "musl" )] #[global_allocator] static GLOBAL : mimalloc ::MiMalloc = mimalloc::MiMalloc; And Cargo.toml [ target . Get a First Glimpse at ‘Stranger Things’ Star’s Upcoming Horror ‘The Swallow’

Deadline has a first look at the new monster movie starring 'Stranger Things' star Grace Van Dien. Deadline has our first look at The Swallow, a brand-new monster movie starring Stranger Things‘ Grace Van Dien (who is yes, the daughter of the great Casper Van Dien) and directed by 2019’s Pet Sematary directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. That’s all well and good, but what makes The Swallow especially notable? Well, per the synopsis, it sounds a heck of a lot like Tremors, except in the woo

Indices, not Pointers

Indices, not Pointers There is a pattern I’ve learned while using Zig which I’ve never seen used in any other language. It’s an extremely simple trick which - when applied to a data structure - reduces memory usage, reduces memory allocations, speeds up accesses, makes freeing instantaneous, and generally makes everything much, much faster. The trick is to use indices, not pointers. This is something I learned from a talk by Andrew Kelley (Zig’s creator) on data-oriented design. It’s used in Z

Behold: Horror Icons Are Getting the Baby Yoda Treatment

It seems these days most major franchises want to cash in on that Star Wars Baby Yoda money by making their own adorable version of something within any given fandom. We saw it last year with the debut of Baby Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and now this year we have Spirit Halloween‘s Horror Babies. The cuteness aggression is too real with Terrifier star Art the Clown—plus Chucky, Ghostface, lil’ Michael Myers, Leatherface, Pennywise, and others, all featured as infants in the Spirit H

Lessons from building an AI data analyst

AI/ML Data Analytics Malloy Malloy TL;DR Text-to-SQL is not enough. Answering real user questions requires going the extra mile like multi-step plans, external tools (coding) and external context. To get the uptime of the operating system use getElapsedMilliseconds or getElapsedTicks . Locks In order to keep your application thread safe you can use locks. With locks you can prevent an other thread to access a variable, function, ... in an unsafe state. Thank God, ‘Fallout’ Season 2 Will Release Weekly

Just as Lucy, the star of Fallout, continues to learn about the decimated world around her, so too has its streamer, Prime Video. After inexplicably breaking its own mold and releasing the entire first season of the show at once, season two will be released weekl. It premieres on December 17, “with the eight-episode season rolling out with one new episode weekly until the season finale on February 4,” according to a press release. Hallelujah! The first season of the show was a massive success f

How does the US use water?

Water infrastructure often gets less attention and focus than other types of infrastructure. Both the Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Energy have annual budgets around $46 billion dollars. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has an annual budget of $60 billion. The closest thing the federal government has to a department of water infrastructure, the Bureau of Reclamation, has an annual budget of just $1.1 billion. Water in the US is generally both widely availabl

Thank You, Jimmy Fallon, for Making the Google Pixel 10 Event Fun

You might not know that Google has its own line of Pixel smartphones, but you probably do know Jimmy Fallon. I'm so pleased to report to you all today that Fallon, host of The Tonight Show, absolutely stole the show while hosting today's Made by Google keynote. In the first 10 minutes of the keynote, Fallon brought back excitement, poked fun at the absurdities of a tech event and ushered in an authenticity that is, frankly, usually lacking from the tech CEOs who typically kick off these kind of

The Made by Google event felt like being sucked into an episode of Wandavision

For the past twenty years or so, I’ve had a clear image of what a product launch keynote is supposed to be like. A charismatic executive walks across the stage, points to some animations and pre-taped clips, a live demo or two happens, and the crowd goes wild. Clips proliferate on social media and cue the online discourse. You can tra

Google, sorry, but that Pixel event was a cringefest

“I P 6 8! I P 6 8!,” shouted late-night host Jimmy Fallon, trying and failing to fake excitement about the new Pixel smartphones. Fallon, who likely had never heard the technical term before, didn’t seem to realize that IP68 — a rating that indicates phones can survive being submerged in water — isn’t all that interesting as a selling point, nor is this water-resistance feature new to Google’s Pixel line. It’s been around since the 2018 Pixel 3. We’re on the Pixel 10 now, for reference. In a su

Fallout S2 teaser brings us to New Vegas

Prime Video has dropped an extended teaser for the much-anticipated second season of Fallout, widely considered to be among the best TV adaptations of a gaming franchise. In our 2024 year-end roundup, Ars senior editor Samuel Axon wrote that the first season gave us "a specific cocktail of tongue-in-cheek humor, sci-fi campiness, strong themes, great characters, and visceral violence [that] came together into a fantastic show." The second season looks like it will bring us more of the same, alon

In ‘Fallout’ Season 2’s First Trailer, All Roads Lead to New Vegas

Ever since season one of Fallout surprised the world with its spin on the iconic RPG series, fans have been eager to see just what Lucy and her Ghoulish ally will get up to after we ended on the cliffhanger tease of one of the most beloved locales in modern Fallout history in the city of New Vegas. Now, we’ve finally got a glimpse of what to expect inside its walls. As part of today’s opening ceremony for Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, Amazon officially debuted the first teaser trailer for

Jimmy Fallon teases ‘secret product drops’ at Google’s star-studded Pixel 10 launch event

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Jimmy Fallon has teased some secret product drops at the Pixel 10 launch event Fallon will be hosting the launch in Brooklyn, New York, on August 20. Google has also teased appearances from NBA superstar Stephen Curry, Formula 1 driver Lando Norris, and the Jonas Brothers Google’s upcoming Made by Google 2025 event is shaping up to be more of a late-night show than a tech keynote. The company previously confirmed that Jimmy Fallon would appear at the big

Amazon’s Fallout season two heads to New Vegas

Prime Video has released new photos from season two of Fallout. Lucy (Ella Purnell), the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and Maximus (Aaron Moten) return as a trio of Wasteland Wanderers whose adventures will bring them to the post-apocalyptic playground of New Vegas. Take a look. Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Lucy’s father Hank, also returns to the show along with Lucy’s brother Norm (Moises Arias) who looks like there’s more evil afoot in the Vaults (duh!). Season two of Fallout is set to start sometime

The First Look at ‘Fallout’ Season 2 Is Ready for Vegas

Amazon has revealed the first official look at Fallout season 2, giving us our first teases at how the series will handle a location fans have been dying to see on screen for years: New Vegas, the main setting of Obsidian’s beloved Fallout: New Vegas. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re getting a good look at New Vegas itself just yet. Today Amazon dropped the first stills from the upcoming season, giving us a fun little catch-up with our major players: Lucy (Ella Purnell) and the Ghoul (Wa

Farmers want California to change its autonomous tractor ban

In some states, autonomous farming equipment is put to work on farms, doing things like spreading fertilizer or getting rid of insects. But in California, these robots aren’t allowed to operate on their own. State safety regulators say operators have to be at the controls, with few exceptions. But farmers say that hurts their business, and could impact food prices for the rest of the country. NBC Bay Area’s Bigad Shaban has a closer look.Aug. 9, 2025

A New ‘Foundation’ Clip Digs Into Some Prickly Family Dynamics

When Foundation fans first met newlyweds Toran (Cody Fern) and Bayta (Synnøve Karlsen) Mallow, two things stood out: first, that last name, signifying Toran’s connection to season two hero Hober Mallow; second, the way their self-aware glamour made them very much resemble futuristic versions of the social media influencers we have today. But it was also apparent there was substance beneath the sparkle—and episode five, “Where Tyrants Spend Eternity,” explores that idea even more. io9 has an exc
