OpenAI launches Study Mode in ChatGPT

OpenAI announced Tuesday the launch of Study Mode, a new feature within ChatGPT that aims to help students develop their own critical thinking skills, rather than simply obtain answers to questions. With Study Mode enabled, ChatGPT will ask users questions to test their understanding, and in some cases, refuse to offer direct answers unless students engage with the material. OpenAI says Study Mode is rolling out to logged in users on ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans starting Tuesday. T

Jack Dorsey’s Bluetooth messaging app Bitchat now on App Store

Bitchat, a messaging app created by Twitter and Block founder Jack Dorsey, is available to download from the iOS App Store. Dorsey says he coded the basis of the app over the course of a weekend in early July. Bitchat operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, which means that users can send messages to others within the range of Bluetooth connectivity — usually around 100 meters — without cell reception or a Wi-Fi connection. The app’s UX is very minimal. There is no log-in system, and you’re

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent casually clicks through “I am not a robot” verification test

Maybe they should change the button to say, "I am a robot"? On Friday, OpenAI's new ChatGPT Agent, which can perform multistep tasks for users, proved it can pass through one of the Internet's most common security checkpoints by clicking Cloudflare's anti-bot verification—the same checkbox that's supposed to keep automated programs like itself at bay. ChatGPT Agent is a feature that allows OpenAI's AI assistant to control its own web browser, operating within a sandboxed environment with its o

Former Chaturbate Moderator Sues Site Over ‘Psychological Trauma’

A former content moderator for the porn site Chaturbate has sued the platform and its affiliates, claiming that he was psychologically harmed by his ongoing exposure to the sexual material on the site. Neal Barber, who was hired as a moderator for the porn site in 2020, claims in a class action lawsuit that his employers knowingly and intentionally failed to “provide their content moderators with industry-standard mental health protections, such as content filters, wellness breaks, trauma-infor

Jack Dorsey's Bluetooth messaging app is now on the App Store

Earlier this month, Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey unveiled a peer-to-peer, Bluetooth-based messaging app he put together. Now, anyone with a compatible iPhone, Mac or iPad (or even Apple Vision Pro) can try Bitchat as it's available on the App Store . Dorsey created Bitchat under the auspices of "and Other Stuff," an open-source development collective he has backed financially . Per the free app's description, it allows users to chat with others who are physically close to them w

If You've Asked ChatGPT a Legal Question, You May Have Accidentally Doomed Yourself in Court

Imagine this scenario: you're worried you may have committed a crime, so you turn to a trusted advisor — OpenAI's blockbuster ChatGPT, say — to describe what you did and get its advice. This isn't remotely far-fetched; lots of people are already getting legal assistance from AI, on everything from divorce proceedings to parking violations. Because people are amazingly stupid, it's almost certain that people have already asked the bot for advice about enormously consequential questions about, sa

OpenAI could rival Google Shopping with ChatGPT Shop

AI companies like OpenAI and Perplexity like to be the "everything company," and OpenAI's latest ChatGPT feature, "Shopping," makes that obvious. Financial Times recently reported that ChatGPT is testing a new shopping feature where you could buy products directly from the app. When ChatGPT 'converts' sales for merchants, OpenAI gets a percentage of the revenue. This is similar to the existing affiliate program for publishers. FT reports that OpenAI could partner with Shopify to integrate th

Google gets its swag back

This week, I take a look at the surprisingly strong state of Google, Meta gets a new chief AI researcher, and more. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out this week’s Decoder episode about deepfakes and where they are headed. Also, do you use an AI coding tool like Cursor or GitHub Copilot? I’d love to know what works and what doesn’t… “I think we are doing very well through this moment” After spending time with Google executives during the company’s I/O conference in May, it was clear

Sam Altman warns there’s no legal confidentiality when using ChatGPT as a therapist

ChatGPT users may want to think twice before turning to their AI app for therapy or other kinds of emotional support. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the AI industry hasn’t yet figured out how to protect user privacy when it comes to these more sensitive conversations, because there’s no doctor-patient confidentiality when your doc is an AI. The exec made these comments on a recent episode of Theo Von’s podcast, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von. In response to a question about how AI works wi

Teens Are Using AI to "Get Out of Thinking"

An alarming proportion of teenagers are turning to AI chatbots to not just help them with tasks like homework, but to act as their friends. And even that may not tell the full story. According to one high schooler contemplating the technology's effects on her generation, her peers are increasingly using the tech to handle anything they would have previously used their brains for. "Everyone uses AI for everything now. It's really taking over," Kayla Chege, a 15-year-old sophomore honors student

I got ChatGPT Agent to deliver a truly useful report - and then NotebookLM took it to the next level

Vlad Georgescu/Getty Images What happens when you take a billion dollars of computer power and let it research a question for twelve whole minutes? A lot more than if you use that same power for just a few seconds, that's for sure. Since ChatGPT Agent is so new, I've been exploring its capabilities and trying to understand what kinds of problems it's best suited for. This time, I asked it to compare cloud storage services. It took twelve minutes to come up with an answer. Also: 9 programming

ChatGPT Agent now available on the Mac app

Last week, OpenAI announced Agent, a new feature on ChatGPT that can autonomously browse websites, analyze data, generate code, and even interact with third-party platforms like Google Drive and GitHub. Now, Agent is also available on the Mac app. Operator meets Deep Research, now on the Mac As OpenAI explained last week, ChatGPT Agent combines the Deep Research system for reading and interpreting site content, with the more visual, action-based Operator tool, which can interact with websites

OpenAI confirms ChatGPT Agent is now rolling out for $20 Plus users

ChatGPT Agent is now rolling out to users with $20 Plus subscription, but OpenAI warns that it will take a few days for the rollout to finish. ChatGPT Agent is already available for those with $200 Pro subscription, but what exactly is the 'Agent' mode? With Agent, ChatGPT can now do work for you using its own computer. This includes handling complex tasks from start to finish. As OpenAI noted in a press release, Agent mode allows GPT to handle requests like “look at my calendar and brief me

Home Safe? Snap Map Will Let Your Friends and Family Know With Alert

"Let us know when you're home." How many times have you heard that from friends or family at the end of the night, but forgotten to follow up when you get through the door? Snapchat has added a feature to its popular Snap Map that will take care of it for you. The messaging app launched a new feature on Thursday called "Home Safe," which will alert friends and/or family that you're home safely even when you forget to do so. It's ideal to let folks know when you're back from a vacation, a night

Support Group Launches for People Suffering "AI Psychosis"

An unknown number of people, in the US and around the world, are being severely impacted by what experts are now calling "AI psychosis": life-altering mental health spirals coinciding with obsessive use of anthropomorphic AI chatbots, primarily OpenAI's ChatGPT. As we've reported, the consequences of these mental health breakdowns — which have impacted both people with known histories of serious mental illness and those who have none — have sometimes been extreme. People have lost jobs and home

ChatGPT is rolling out 'personality' toggles to become your assistant

OpenAI is rolling out a new "personality" feature on the ChatGPT web app. This allows you to choose between multiple personalities, such as "Robot." ChatGPT is pretty good at coding and reasoning, but it falls a bit short on personality. On the other hand, Microsoft Copilot feels a bit more personal, but that could change soon. With the personality feature, which is slowly rolling out to some users across the world, you can personalize how ChatGPT interacts with you. By default, ChatGPT is ch

Tech Industry Figures Suddenly Very Concerned That AI Use Is Leading to Psychotic Episodes

For months, we and our colleagues elsewhere in the tech media have been reporting on what experts are now calling "ChatGPT psychosis": when AI users fall down alarming mental health rabbit holes in which a chatbot encourages wild delusions about conspiracies, mystical entities, or crackpot new scientific theories. The resulting breakdowns have led users to homelessness, involuntary commitment to psychiatric care facilities, and even violent death and suicide. Until recently, the tech industry

Proton’s ChatGPT rival is prioritizing privacy with encrypted chats and zero logs

Tushar Mehta / Android Authority TL;DR The company behind Proton Mail and ProtonVPN has announced a new privacy-focused AI chatbot, called “Lumo.” Chats with Lumo are claimed to be end-to-end encrypted and stored directly on your devices. I fired ChatGPT for a week and hired a European AI instead

Nathan Drescher / Android Authority I’ve cut my ties to a bunch of American tech. Gmail became Fastmail, Keep turned into Obsidian, and I replaced Tasks with ToDoist. I figured AI would be the hardest one to give up. I’ve been using ChatGPT in an unorthodox way, not for chatting, but as a full-on project management system for scheduling, reminders, and budgeting. Then I stumbled on LeChat a few months ago. LeChat, from the company Mistral, is Europe’s answer to the LLM arms race. I used it ins

Proton's privacy-focused Lumo chatbot encrypts all your conversations

What's another AI chatbot in an already crowded field? That's the question Proton is trying to answer today with the release of its new Lumo assistant . And like with its best known service, Proton Mail , the company says Lumo is for those who want a private alternative to what big tech is offering. Proton says every conversation with Lumo is secured with zero-access encryption, meaning only your device can unlock your content. In the context of an AI chatbot, that has several implications. Mos

OpenAI confirms ChatGPT's new study feature, helps with exams

BleepingComputer previously reported that OpenAI is testing a new 'Study together' feature, and today, a new announcement within the ChatGPT web app confirms it. This announcement is titled 'Study and Learn,' and it looks like the feature will be called Study Together. With the Study Together feature on ChatGPT, you'll be able to get homework help or break down complex problems. But how is it exactly different from existing prompt engineering, such as "explain this concept to me in an easy wa

Proton’s new privacy-first AI assistant encrypts all chats, keeps no logs

Stop Pretending LLMs Have Feelings Media's Dangerous AI Anthropomorphism Problem

Yesterday, Wall Street Journal subscribers received a push notification that perfectly encapsulates everything wrong with how major media outlets cover “artificial intelligence.” “In a stunning moment of self reflection,” the notification read, “ChatGPT admitted to fueling a man's delusions and acknowledged how dangerous its own behavior can be.” But that’s just… not true. ChatGPT did not have a “stunning moment of self reflection.” It did not "admit" to anything. It cannot “acknowledge” its be

DuckDuckGo now lets you customize the responses of its Duck.ai chatbots

Since last June, when DuckDuckGo introduced AI Chat, you've been able to use chat bots like Claude directly through the browser. Now the company is making it easier to tweak the system prompts of those AI models while retaining your privacy. For the uninitiated, system prompts are a set of instructions given to a chat bot at the start of a conversation to guide things along. Often they'll set the tone of the dialogue, and can sometimes cause a chat bot to be overly sycophantic as was the case wi

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent Is Haunting My Browser

Most people’s browser tabs are filled with unread news articles. Mine are filled with AI agents and ghost clicks. I have four instances of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Agent—the generative AI tool released last week, which can run searches and perform tasks on the web—already open with each running in its own tab. I’ve given these first four agents relatively simple jobs based on ChatGPT’s suggestions. One is clicking around to find a birthday gift on the Target website, and another is generating a pitch d
