Hobbyist converts 1995 TrueTime XL-AK GPS unit into Raspberry Pi NTP server

A maker restored a vintage 1995 TrueTime XL-AK GPS time server by gutting it and installing a Raspberry Pi 5 paired with Jimmy Paputto's L1 GNSS HAT, turning the old hardware into a working stratum 1 NTP time server. The project reuses the unit's original LCD screen and bicolor LED for status display, and the builder intends to add it to the public NTP Pool and use it for time services at the VCF Midwest event.

NHTSA Investigates Tesla Cybercab Over Federal Safety Standards Compliance

Tesla began deploying its steering-wheel-free Cybercab to the public in Texas and Florida as part of its Robotaxi network, shortly after unveiling the vehicles to fans in Austin. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now investigating whether the Cybercab meets existing federal vehicle safety standards, which still require equipment like brake pedals and mirrors that Tesla's vehicle lacks.

Hacker uses AI tool Fable to reverse-engineer PianoDisc's proprietary MIDI encoding

A PianoDisc Protégé owner used AI models Astra and Fable to analyze and recreate a self-playing piano arrangement, then fed Fable a purchased PianoDisc MP3 to study its format. Fable decoded the file's hidden MIDI channel and discovered PianoDisc embeds obfuscating 'decoy notes' to prevent extracted MIDI from playing correctly elsewhere, then built both an encoder and decoder capable of replicating and stripping that protection. The poster is now asking whether releasing this decoder and encoder publicly would be legally permissible.

3M Hid Evidence That PFAS 'Forever Chemicals' Were in Human Blood for Decades

ProPublica reporter Sharon Lerner uncovered internal 3M records showing the company knew as early as the 1970s that PFAS compounds used in nonstick coatings, food packaging and stain-resistant products had entered people's bloodstreams worldwide. Rather than disclosing this, 3M kept the findings confidential for decades, according to a former company scientist who spoke with Lerner.

Ottocast Adapter Converts Wired CarPlay Ports to Wireless Connections

Ottocast makes a small USB dongle that plugs into a car's existing CarPlay port and relays the connection to an iPhone over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a cable. After an initial Bluetooth pairing and approval step, the adapter automatically reconnects to the paired iPhone each time the car starts. The interface, controls and features remain identical to standard Apple CarPlay, with no separate Ottocast software layer.

Razer debuts $110 Clio X headrest speaker, undercutting original by $120

Razer introduced the Clio X at PAX West 2026, a cheaper version of its head-cushion speaker for gaming chairs, priced at $110 versus the original Clio's $230. It swaps the flagship's 43mm aluminum drivers for two 38mm speakers and two 55mm passive radiators, still supporting THX Spatial Audio and Razer's low-latency HyperSpeed 2.4GHz wireless connection. It attaches to any gaming chair headrest via a nylon strap and runs on USB-C power, ideally a 15W PD source.
