Bluesky will comply with age-verification laws in South Dakota and Wyoming after exiting Mississippi

After blocking its service in Mississippi over its new age-assurance law, the social networking startup is taking a different approach to comply with laws in South Dakota and Wyoming. Instead of requiring Bluesky to restrict access to all unverified users, users in South Dakota and Wyoming can verify their ages through the Kids Web Services’ (KWS) solution. The service allows users to choose from multiple methods to verify their ages, which may include payment cards, an identity document, an an

Bluesky is rolling out age verification in South Dakota and Wyoming

Bluesky is expanding its age verification features stateside. The service will require users in South Dakota and Wyoming to verify their ages in order to access direct messaging and adult content on the site. The update comes after both states have enacted laws requiring online platforms that host "harmful" content to verify the ages of their users. Bluesky's approach will mirror its actions in the UK, which also requires age checks following the passage of its Online Safety Act. The company ha

Can I have a new password, please? The $400M question.

Back in August 2023, attackers tied to the Scattered Spider group didn’t exploit a zero-day vulnerability to hack Clorox. They simply called the service desk (run by Cognizant), claimed to be locked-out employees, and asked for password and MFA resets. According to court filings and reporting, the attacker repeatedly phoned Cognizant’s service desk, obtained repeated resets without meaningful verification, and used the resulting access to move quickly toward domain-admin footholds. Clorox says

Spotify peeved after 10,000 users sold data to build AI tools

For millions of Spotify users, the "Wrapped" feature—which crunches the numbers on their annual listening habits—is a highlight of every year's end, ever since it debuted in 2015. NPR once broke down exactly why our brains find the feature so "irresistible," while Cosmopolitan last year declared that sharing Wrapped screenshots of top artists and songs had by now become "the ultimate status symbol" for tens of millions of music fans. It's no surprise then that, after a decade, some Spotify user

Amazon's Zoox launches its autonomous robotaxi service

Amazon's Zoox has announced that its robotaxi service is now available on and around the Las Vegas Strip after months of testing. The autonomous rides are free and can be booked through the Zoox app for iOS and Android devices. This is the company's first official service launch after Amazon acquired the self-driving startup in 2020. The Las Vegas service will operate at select pickup and drop-off locations along the Strip, and riders will enter and exit the vehicles at each destination's ride-

Kerberoasting

I learn about cryptographic vulnerabilities all the time, and they generally fill me with some combination of jealousy (“oh, why didn’t I think of that”) or else they impress me with the brilliance of their inventors. But there’s also another class of vulnerabilities: these are the ones that can’t possibly exist in important production software, because there’s no way anyone could still do that in 2025. Today I want to talk about one of those ridiculous ones, something Microsoft calls “low tech

Amazon’s Zoox announced today that it’s making its robotaxis available to all customers in Las Vegas. And the news comes a few weeks after federal regulators gave the company the green light to expand the use of its robota

AI gaming startup Born raises $15M to build ‘social’ AI companions that combat loneliness

Fabian Kamberi, CEO and co-founder of the Berlin-based AI gaming startup Born, thinks the current AI companions on the market are designed to be exploitative and geared towards isolating users through one-to-one relationships with AI chatbots. “It feels like it fuels the loneliness epidemic, instead of making it more fun and giving users the opportunity to make their lives better,” Kamberi told TechCrunch. The future of AI companions, he says, is about shared experiences that strengthen real-w

Zoox opens its Las Vegas robotaxi service to the public

Zoox robotaxis — custom-built all-electric and autonomous vehicles that operate without a steering wheel or pedals — can now be hailed by the public in Las Vegas. But this isn’t a commercial service just yet. For now, the Zoox robotaxi service currently offer rides for free. The Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company, which launched the free service on Wednesday, has been chugging toward this milestone for years now. The company spent six years developing its technology before unveiling its p

Microsoft fixes app install issues caused by August Windows updates

Microsoft has fixed a known issue caused by the August 2025 security updates, which triggers unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts and app installation problems for non-admin users on all Windows versions. This issue is caused by a security patch that mitigates a Windows Installer privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2025-50173), which can enable authenticated attackers to gain SYSTEM privileges. To address the CVE-2025-50173 security flaw, Microsoft has implemented new User Account

Reddit is dropping subscriber counts on subreddits

Reddit users can no longer see how many people are subscribed to their favorite subreddit communities. The platform has announced that it’s removing the member count metric that appears on subreddit pages — located under the page bio on the right for desktop users, or at the top under the subreddit name on mobile — to better focus on real-time engagement. The member count is being replaced by two metrics. One shows how many users have visited a subreddit in the past seven days, “based on a roll

Should you upgrade to Apple Watch Series 11? Here's how it compares to older models

Longevity is one of my favorite things about Apple hardware; I can be reassured that my investments will last me for years. When a shiny new product rolls around, I don't feel the pull to swap out the one I have at home that still works perfectly. This is why I still rock my Apple Watch Series 7 after four years, and why I have yet

The company said it will add more dating modes that will lean into interests, dating intentions, and different ways to connect

Robinhood embraces copy trading after warning competitors about regulatory risks

What a difference a changing regulatory environment makes. Roughly nine months after suggesting that a young copy trading platform could only operate because it flew “under the radar” of regulators, Robinhood has announced its own entry into the space with “Robinhood Social,” a new feature that will allow users to follow and manually replicate the trades of prominent investors. The move represents a striking about-face for the online brokerage, which has historically been cautious about featur

I tried the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, and SE - what the keynote didn't tell you

Nina Raemont/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Apple's iPhone event brought us several new phones, but my eyes (and hands) were all over the three new smartwatches the tech giant debuted this week. Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 11, the Ultra 3, and SE 3 at its September "Awe-dropping" event, and I have some first-hand thoughts. Apple's baseline Apple Watch Series 11 is the smartwatch that hobbyist health trackers and small wrists should buy, with a starting p

Apple acquiesced to my Apple Watch SE 3 demands (mostly)

Earlier this year, I typed up an open letter to Apple, giving the company my unsolicited (but completely free of charge!) suggestions on what it could do to improve its entry-level smartwatch, the Apple Watch SE. Now that the iPhone event has concluded I wanted to see if anyone over in Cupertino took my advice. I asked for a bigger screen, a faster processor and faster charging. I said flashier materials weren't necessary, nor was an always-on display. I also didn't think the watch needed to ha

Apple Watch Series 11 hands-on: Feels and looks the same, but real changes are deeper

Though the Apple Watch announcements may have paled in comparison to the iPhone news at Apple's event today, there were still some noteworthy updates to the smartwatch lineup to talk about. This year, we're getting the Watch Series 11, Watch SE 3 and Watch Ultra 3, and each of them have some interesting features. At a hands-on session here at Apple Park, I spent some time with the devices, and believe the most intriguing is the Series 11. At first glance, the Series 11 is no different from the
