Jürgen Schmidhuber:the Father of Generative AI Without Turing Award

In the sweltering heat of Shanghai, Jazzyear had the privilege of meeting Professor Jürgen Schmidhuber, a distinguished guest at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC). Based on years of earlier research, Schmidhuber and his student Sepp Hochreiter published the architecture and training algorithms for Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks in 1997 in a journal. This type of RNN (Recurrent Neural Network) is widely used by tech giants for applications in natural language p

What would a Kubernetes 2.0 look like

Around 2012-2013 I started to hear a lot in the sysadmin community about a technology called "Borg". It was (apparently) some sort of Linux container system inside of Google that ran all of their stuff. The terminology was a bit baffling, with something called a "Borglet" inside of clusters with "cells" but the basics started to leak. There was a concept of "services" and a concept of "jobs", where applications could use services to respond to user requests and then jobs to complete batch jobs t

Waymo's Self-Driving Service Expands in California, With Eyes on New York. What to Know

Self-driving cars are slowly becoming less sci-fi and more real-world as companies like Waymo, the driverless arm of Google's parent Alphabet, expand into more cities. This week, the robotaxi service stretched into more parts of the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. And starting next month, Waymo will start testing its autonomous tech in New York City. Now, Bay Area riders can hail a fully autonomous Waymo ride in Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae and Burlingame via the W

Waymo Expands Its Self-Driving Service Throughout California. Here's Everything to Know

Self-driving cars are slowly becoming less sci-fi and more real-world as companies like Waymo, the driverless arm of Google's parent Alphabet, expand into more cities. On Tuesday, the robotaxi service stretched into more parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, and it'll also be extending its reach in Los Angeles this week. Now, Bay Area riders can hail a fully autonomous Waymo ride in Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae and Burlingame via the Waymo One app, and select riders can acc

You’ll Guffaw When You Hear How Much Self-Driving Waymos Cost Compared to Human-Driven Ubers

The whole point of self-driving taxis is, in theory, to save costs on human labor — but Waymo, Google's glitchy robotaxi service, doesn't appear to be any cheaper at all, at least for now. In a report shared with TechCrunch, the ride-hailing data aggregator Obi found that riding with Waymo is pretty much always more expensive than taking a ride with a human-driven Uber or Lyft. For its analysis, Obi analyzed roughly 90,000 records from Uber, Lyft, and Waymo rides between March 25 and April 25

Robotaxis coming to UK streets in 2026 as Wayve and Uber team up

Why it matters: Robotaxis have been in testing across the US for years, but they have yet to go mainstream. Efforts by various companies have stalled due to accidents, legal hurdles, and widespread public skepticism. Now, one US firm is partnering with a UK technology provider to push ahead with international trials. Wayve has announced a partnership with Uber to bring autonomous ridesharing to the UK. The pilot follows the passage of Britain's Automated Vehicles Act (AVA), which legalizes the

Uber ditches commissions in favor of daily fees for rickshaw drivers in India

Uber is moving away from its commission-based model for three-wheeled motorized rickshaw drivers in India in response to increased competition from local rivals Rapido and Namma Yatri. The ride-hailing giant will instead charge drivers a daily fee to use the platform and connect to riders. The business model change is the latest update to Uber’s business in India in an attempt to make the margins work. In 2015, Uber first launched its auto-rickshaw service in the market but suspended shortly a
