I Took My Leica On a Trip to the Arctic. Here Are My Pro Tips for a Photography Adventure

Earlier this year, I traveled to Sweden to research, write and photograph a feature for CNET on why electric cars are great for winter driving. It was a huge undertaking, requiring me to travel around multiple parts of Sweden and venture north into the frozen Arctic Circle. As both a journalist and a professional photographer, it was my job to not just tell the story with my words, but to capture it on camera. That meant traveling with precisely the right equipment and knowing exactly how to use

ChatGPT hallucinated about music app Soundslice so often, the founder made the lie come true

Earlier this month, Adrian Holovaty, founder of music-teaching platform Soundslice, solved a mystery that had been plaguing him for weeks. Weird images of what were clearly ChatGPT sessions kept being uploaded to the site. Once he solved it, he realized that ChatGPT had become one of his company’s greatest hype men – but it was also lying to people about what his app could do. LookingGlass: Generative Anamorphoses via Laplacian Pyramid Warping

Anamorphosis refers to a category of images that are intentionally distorted, making them unrecognizable when viewed directly. Their true form only reveals itself when seen from a specific viewpoint, which can be through some catadioptric device like a mirror or a lens. While the construction of these mathematical devices can be traced back to as early as the 17th century, they are only interpretable when viewed from a specific vantage point and tend to lose meaning when seen normally. How generative AI could help make construction sites safer

To combat the shortcuts and risk-taking, Lorenzo is working on a tool for the San Francisco–based company DroneDeploy, which sells software that creates daily digital models of work progress from videos and images, known in the trade as “reality capture.” The tool, called Safety AI, analyzes each day’s reality capture imagery and flags conditions that violate Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules, with what he claims is 95% accuracy. That means that for any safety risk the

Researchers Uncover Hidden Ingredients Behind AI Creativity

We were once promised self-driving cars and robot maids. Instead, we’ve seen the rise of artificial intelligence systems that can beat us in chess, analyze huge reams of text and compose sonnets. This has been one of the great surprises of the modern era: physical tasks that are easy for humans turn out to be very difficult for robots, while algorithms are increasingly able to mimic our intellect. Another surprise that has long perplexed researchers is those algorithms’ knack for their own, str

Hate the leaked Nothing Phone 3 design? These new leaks are bad news for you

TL;DR New leaked images add weight to the previously leaked renders of the Nothing Headphone 1 and Nothing Phone 3. In these leaked images, the Nothing Headphone 1 appears once again with its retro-futuristic cassette-inspired look. Nothing is set to launch the Nothing Phone 3 and the Nothing Headphone 1 tomorrow, July 1. Ahead of

From hallucinations to hardware: Lessons from a real-world computer vision project gone sideways

Join the event trusted by enterprise leaders for nearly two decades. VB Transform brings together the people building real enterprise AI strategy. Learn more Computer vision projects rarely go exactly as planned, and this one was no exception. The idea was simple: Build a model that could look at a photo of a laptop and identify any physical damage — things like cracked screens, missing keys or broken hinges. It seemed like a straightforward use case for image models and large language models (

Apple Research unearthed forgotten AI technique and using it to generate images

Today, most generative image models basically fall into two main categories: diffusion models, like Stable Diffusion, or autoregressive models, like OpenAI’s GPT-4o. But Apple just released two papers that show how there might be room for a third, forgotten technique: Normalizing Flows. And with a dash of Transformers on top, they might be more capable than previously thought. First things first: What are Normalizing Flows? Normalizing Flows (NFs) are a type of AI model that works by learning

Google rolls out Street View time travel to celebrate 20 years of Google Earth

After 20 years, being able to look at any corner of the planet in Google Earth doesn't seem that impressive, but it was a revolution in 2005. Soon, Google Earth will help you travel back in time with historic Street View integration, and pro users will get some new "AI-driven insights"—of course Google can't update a product without adding at least a little AI. I tested Gemini’s latest image generator and here are the results

Back in November, I tested the image generation capabilities within Google’s Gemini, which was powered by the Imagen 3 model. While I liked it, I ran into its limitations pretty quickly. Google recently rolled out its successor — Imagen 4 — and I’ve been putting it through its paces over the last couple of weeks. I think the new version is definitely an improvement, as some of the issues I had with Imagen 3 are now thankfully gone. But some frustrations still remain, meaning the new version isn
