LWN discusses efforts to curb undefined behavior in C standard

An LWN.net article recounts a talk explaining why undefined behavior exists in C and how the language's standard, dating back to C89, was built around an abstract machine model to accommodate diverse historical hardware. The speaker outlined C's enduring strengths—portability, fast compilation, predictable binaries—while detailing how the standard only guarantees 'observable' behavior, leaving much else open to compiler implementers.

Stanford PhD Student Uses AI to Propose Viral Genetic Blueprints

Samuel King, a bioengineering PhD candidate at Stanford, employed a generative AI model in 2025 to create genetic blueprints for microscopic viruses. His work suggests that AI could potentially be used to design new biological entities in the future. The interview with senior AI reporter James O'Donnell will explore the implications of this research for biology and AI development.

Researcher develops UV-activated invisible tattoo ink, tests it on himself

Nanoscientist Carson Bruns of the University of Colorado Boulder tattooed his own leg with an ink that stays invisible until exposed to ultraviolet light, and can be erased with bright visible light. His team created magenta, yellow and blue versions made of photochromic dye encased in tiny acrylic spheres, tested on pig and silicone skin, with findings published in Matter & Light. Bruns previously commercialized a related UV-reactive ink called Magic Ink through his startup HYPRSKN in 2024.
