X-Clacks-Overhead

About the Signal X-Clacks-Overhead is a non-standardised HTTP header based upon the fictional work of the late, great, Sir Terry Pratchett. In Terry Pratchett's science-fantasy Discworld series, "The Clacks" is a network infrastructure of Semaphore Towers, that operate in a similar fashion to telegraph - named "Clacks" because of the clicking sound the system makes as signals send. In Sir Terry's novel "Going Postal", the story explains that the inventor of the Clacks - a man named Robert Dea

Everything You Can Do in the Photoshop Mobile App

You know your software is a success when its name becomes a verb: You'll now commonly hear about images being photoshopped, even if the editing wasn't done with the Adobe image editor. Adobe might not like it, but the usage shows how dominant its flagship product has become. On mobile though, Photoshop hasn't achieved the same kind of ubiquity or brand recognition. We've had official Photoshop apps of various types down the years, but none of them have really translated the power and feature se

Android May Soon Warn You About Fake Cell Towers

In recent years, North Korea has deployed thousands of so-called IT workers to infiltrate Western businesses, get paid salaries, and send money back to support the regime. As the schemes have become more successful, they have grown increasingly elaborate and employed new tactics to evade detection. But this week, the United States Justice Department revealed one of its biggest operations to tackle IT workers to date. The DOJ says it has identified six Americans who allegedly helped enable the s

This is not a tattoo robot

I walked into Blackdot’s tattoo studio in Austin’s east side on a sweltering May afternoon. After shaking my sweat-soaked hand, founder and CEO Joel Pennington led me up into an office building and opened the door to a small, three-room space. Critics have unflatteringly compared the studio to a sterile hospital room — a comparison not entirely without merit. In a corner room, the machine I had come here to see loomed: a humming, fridge-sized device reminiscent of an old X-ray unit. Blackdot cal

AI Seizes Top Spot on Leaderboard for White Hat Hackers

For the first time ever, an AI model has seized the top spot on a white hat hacking leaderboard. Xbow's use of AI for white hat hacking follows a long tradition of automation on both sides of the ethics divide, culminating in a majority of hackers using the technolo

Neither AI nor E Ink can make touchscreen trackpads a good idea

E Ink, the company behind the highly readable displays you'll find in ereaders the world over, has created a new touchscreen trackpad for some reason. And rather than act as an extension of your laptop's screen, E Ink thinks it should be a dedicated home for AI interactions. The new touchscreen trackpad appears to use a color E Ink display, not unlike what you'll find on the Kobo Libra Colour or the Kindle Colorsoft, and is supposed to offer the normal swiping, tapping, dragging and clicking fu

Tesla's Self-Driving Mode Causes It to Get Hit by Train

Tesla's so-called "self-driving" features have some serious issues with train tracks — and in a recent instance, it led to a small collision with a moving freight train. As Pennsylvania-based broadcaster WFMZ reports, a family of three was forced to exit their Tesla in the wee hours of the morning after it decided, when in an assisted driving mode, to turn left onto some train tracks. Jared Renshaw, the fire commissioner for Southeastern PA's Western Berks County, told WFMZ that the car was in

A Group of Young Cybercriminals Poses the ‘Most Imminent Threat’ of Cyberattacks Right Now

Empty grocery store shelves and grounded planes tend to signal a crisis, whether it’s an extreme weather event, public health crisis, or geopolitical emergency. But these scenes of chaos in recent weeks in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada were caused instead by financially motivated cyberattacks—seemingly perpetrated by a collective of joyriding teens. A notorious cybercriminal group often called Scattered Spider is known for using social engineering techniques to infiltrate target

The Ultrahuman Ring Air Shamed Me Into Ditching Unhealthy Habits

This is a little embarrassing to admit as someone who reviews wearables for a living, but the Ultrahuman Ring Air is my first-ever smart ring. I've tested just about every smartwatch and fitness tracker on the market, but never a ring. And honestly, that probably makes me the perfect person to review it -- not as a biohacking pro, but as someone who went into this exactly how most buyers would: curious, slightly skeptical and wondering whether it would make me ditch my smartwatch. Better yet, wo

Got a suspicious UPS text? Don't reply - it might be a scam. Here's how to tell

Elyse Betters Picaro / ZDNET I've been anxiously expecting a package from UPS. That's why a text I received the other day caught my eye. Claiming to be from UPS, the message said that the carrier attempted to deliver the package on June 27, but the delivery couldn't be completed. The date was one when my wife and I were away, so this seemed legitimate at first glance. Also: Got a suspicious E-ZPass text? Don't click the link (and what to do if you already did) However, I've written plenty of
