How do AI models generate videos?

Sure, the clips you see in demo reels are cherry-picked to showcase a company’s models at the top of their game. But with the technology in the hands of more users than ever before—Sora and Veo 3 are available in the ChatGPT and Gemini apps for paying subscribers—even the most casual filmmaker can now knock out something remarkable. The downside is that creators are competing with AI slop, and social media feeds are filling up with faked news footage. Video generation also uses up a huge amount

You shouldn’t buy the best Android phone

Robert Triggs / Android Authority Last week, I came across a now-deleted Reddit thread from a Google Pixel user who discussed their perceived satisfaction when using a Google Pixel 9a versus the more expensive Pixel 9 Pro. The original poster detailed their experience buying the most expensive Pixel out there, not being happy with it, returning it, and buying the Pixel 9a instead, and ending up much more content with the cheaper phone despite their (very tech-savvy) friends’ constant taunting a

5 things the iPhone 17 series copied from Android phones

Joe Maring / Android Authority Unless you were living under an iPhone 17 Pro Max-sized rock this past week, you probably heard something about Apple’s latest iPhone lineup. Apple’s latest batch of handsets includes the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the all-new iPhone Air. While they’re ultimately still iPhones, I think it’s safe to say that there’s plenty to like about the iPhone 17 family. Apple made a surprising number of upgrades this time around, and for iPhone shoppers,

Poll: Android users, are this year’s iPhones tempting you to switch?

Apple’s new iPhones, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the ultra-thin iPhone Air, are finally going out into the world. Once again, the lineup reads like it’s chasing a lot of things Android users have been enjoying for years, but that’s really not a bad thing. From more generous base storage to longer battery life, newer camera tricks, and more, Apple is slowly but steadily narrowing the list of “Android-only” advantages. But are all these changes enough for you to

iPhone Air launch in China delayed due to eSIM regulatory issues

The iPhone Air is Apple’s flashiest new iPhone model, featuring a strikingly thin industrial design. One of the ways Apple achieved this sleek profile was to maximise internal space by making all iPhones Airs rely on eSIM, with no physical SIM card slot model available. Despite announcing at the event that the iPhone Air would be available in China through carrier China Telecom, Apple has since delayed the launch. Via The South China Morning Post, the iPhone Air will not go on sale in China tod

Full Moon: Seestar S50 vs. Samsung S25

The full moon is one of those sights that almost begs to be photographed, no matter what camera you’re using. Most of the time, that means a smartphone, and to be fair, modern phones are excellent at handling bright subjects like the moon. Of course, a telescope should reveal far more than a phone camera, but I wanted to see just how big that difference really is. So last night, under clear skies, I took two photos. Seestar S50 smart telescope : designed for astrophotography, with a larger ape

Gene-edited pancreatic cells transplanted into a patient with type 1 diabetes

Crispr gene-editing technology has demonstrated its revolutionary potential in recent years: It has been used to treat rare diseases, to adapt crops to withstand the extremes of climate change, or even to change the color of a spider’s web. But the greatest hope is that this technology will help find a cure for a global disease, such as diabetes. A new study points in that direction. For the first time, researchers succeeded in implanting Crispr-edited pancreatic cells in a man with type 1 diab

Becoming the person who does the thing

It can be disorienting when our beliefs shift. The world we helped create no longer exists, and our role in it transforms too. It can be unsettling, naturally. But that's kind of the point. Looking back at times when I held certain beliefs—about how the world works, and what my role in this story is—it can feel less like a mod was installed and more like an entirely new operating system was swapped in. Up until my late twenties, I could count the number of times I had been to the gym on one h

VPNs and Age-Verification Laws: What You Need to Know

The problem is how the verification happens. You aren’t verifying your age with the government. You’re routing it through an independent third party, and most of the laws on the books are designed specifically in this way. In the UK, for example, Reddit verifies with Persona, and Bluesky uses Kids Web Services (owned by Epic Games). Persona’s privacy policy states that it collects not only biometric information and personal details, like your ID, but also ties that to information gathered from

Sony has announced the Xperia 10 VII, a midrange Android phone that’s launching in the UK, Europe, and Asia, though not the US. YouTube Music rolls out dual-pane Now Playing redesign on Android, iOS

After testing first got underway in November, YouTube Music is now rolling out a big Now Playing redesign on Android and iOS. The Song/Video switcher is no longer at the top of Now Playing, but Cast remains next to the three-dot overflow menu. After the song name (which can be tapped to access Related) and artist, you now get the controls row. This does not really impact one-handed usage, but it does move things further up the screen. This is followed by a new boxy scrubber that gets rid of t

Performance-focused forks of styled-components

Your React app might be 40% slower on first render than it needs to be. Not because you wrote bad code. Not because React is slow. But because styled-components never implemented React 18's useInsertionEffect hook: a feature specifically designed to solve CSS-in-JS performance problems. While React 18 shipped in March 2022 with this optimization path, styled-components remained on React 17 patterns, injecting styles during render instead of between render and layout. This creates a performanc

This Pop-Out Phone Controller Could Reinvent How We Think of Mobile Gaming

Today’s retro recreations are so good at replicating the Game Boy’s look, feel, and portability. The problem is, my pockets are already occupied with my mobile supercomputer that contains my life behind a 6.3-inch pane of glass. If my phone has a powerful processor and excellent AMOLED display, why can’t it also become my gaming device when I’m on the go? After Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) lays into her at the end of the second season of the Tim Burton show, seemingly to push her to be herself in the meanest way possible, Agnes gets gutted emotionally in a way that could have been a villain origin but goes in a surprisingly positive direction. “I th

GrapheneOS and forensic extraction of data (2024)

Matthai Hi, I am writing an article and I am sharing a draft with you. I will be glad if you share your thoughts and suggestions with me. GrapheneOS is an Android-based, open source, privacy and security-focused mobile operating system for mobile phones. It is one of the most secure and privacy protecting operating systems (and yes, it does this task comparable and in some scenarios even better than iOS, but we will come to that later). However, in the beginning of May, someone started an at
